After the merge of Seismology Department of The Romanian Institute of Geology and Geophysics with the Geodynamics Laboratory , in February 1997 was established Center for Earth Physics (CEP). Following the decision no. 48/12.02.1994 - regarding the organization of the research activity in the field of Earth Physics, CEP became The National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP) and later, according to the decision no. 1313/25.11.1996, it became The National Institute for Research-Development for Earth Physics (NIRDEP). NIRDEP is currently coordinated by The National Authority for Scientific Research, a part of the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sport.
NIRDEP’s activity unfolds in the following principal research domains:
I.1. physics of seismic source
I.2. seismotectonics
I.3. seismic monitoring and evaluation of the seismic hazard
I.4. earthquake prediction based on geophysic and geodesic precursors
I.5. engineering seismology
I.6. seismic microzoning for densely populated areas
I.7. internal structure of the Earth
I.8. seismic tomography
II.1. seismic zoning (seismic hazard map for Romania’s territory)
II.2. seismic microzoning (evaluation of the local seismic hazard) for densely populated areas
III.1. studies for Nuclear Power Plants locations and other national importance objectives (dams, military objectives, bridges, hospitals, schools, etc.)
III.2.implementation of a real time warning system for industrial objectives and other units of national concern, in case of a major earthquake
III.3. seismic tomography for dams
III.4. ground motion mapping in case of strong earthquakes (Shake/Quake Map)
III.5. evaluation of the seismic hazard on Romania’s territory according to the European norms-EC8
IV.1. the seismic station Cheia- Muntele Roşu AS081-MLR
IV.2.National Data Center of Romania NDC 142-ROM_NDC, elaborated by NIRDEP
