Central European Initiative Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the CEI meeting "Unified representation of trans-frontalier macroseismic data sets"
ICTP – Trieste, Italy, November 17-18, 2009
The meeting was organized by the CEI Earth Science Committee in cooperation with Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)/SAND Group in the framework of the Project 1202.038-09 ”Unified seismic hazard mapping for the territory of Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Republic of Macedonia”. 16 participants from 4 countries partners in the project (Bulgaria, Italy, Republic of Macedonia, Romania) and 2 countries involved in the project (Republic of Moldova and Russia) attended the meeting. One of the partner countries (Serbia) could not attend the meeting.
Welcome words were addressed by Prof. G.F. Panza. He expressed the gratitude to Russian team for their acceptance to be actively involved in the project. Also he thanked to Gabriella de Meo for her kind contribution in organizing the meeting.
Dr. M. Radulian made a general presentation of the project and the scope of the meeting.
During the meeting 10 presentations were made related to the macroseismic observation data, formalized approaches to define the shape of isoseismals and seismic hazard evaluation by neodeterministic computation method.
An important goal of the meeting was the active interaction between participants to evaluate and summarized the results and future developments.
Following the discussions, the participants agreed on:
- three Vrancea events (30 and 31 May, 1990 and 27 October, 2004) will be added to the existing data set (1940, 1977, 1986).
- to set up a data set of macroseismic observations, made available to all the partners by NIEP, the original information has to be considered (the raw data).
- all the data will be organized in an appropriate data set containing geographical coordinates, observed intensity, corresponding scale and source of data in care of national coordinators (I. Paskaleva, D. Dojcinovski/L.. Pekevski, M. Radulian, S. Radovanovic, V. Alcaz/I. Sandu). Prof. I. Paskaleva will collect these contributions. The suitable format for data processing will be provided by Prof. T. Kronrod.
- any data processing will not be included in the original data set.
- a brochure and a CD on data set will be prepared and distributed to all the participants (Prof. I. Paskaleva, Dr. I. Sandu and Dr. M. Popa will be responsible), as many as possible scanned versions of the refereed documents will be added. Prof. Panza mentioned that ICTP can support the publication of the brochure.
- NIEP will be in charge to store the data set and its processing made by Prof. T. Kronrod; a backup data set will be available at ICTP.
- The problems evidenced during the meeting about some macroseismic data makes it is important the participation of Serbia in the cooperation work. Therefore, all the participants agreed with the proposal of Prof. Panza to organize a meeting in Serbia, in the next 6 months, with the possible ICTP, NIEP support. This meeting will focus on the problem of collecting and analyzing the data for the 3 Vrancea events (May 30 and 31, 1990 and October 27, 2004).
- Modeling will be revised considering updated information about the structure of the study region exploiting also the strong ground motion records.
- The last of the meeting was dedicated to the homogenization of the structural models to be used in the computations of synthetic seismograms (responsible C. Cioflan, M. Kouteva, C. La Mura, F. Vaccari, L.Pekevski, I. Sandu).
