Summary of the wrap-up discussions, conclusions and recommendations (Friday, 4 December)
Stucchi (Task 3.1 leader)
Presents a summary of the NERIES-SHARE electronic archive and of the procedures to access and fill. At the same time he draws attention on the importance to focus the historical investigation on particular earthquakes in order to have results in reasonable short time. To this purpose it is crucial to follow all the available sources and to go, as much as possible, to the earliest source. As concerns the Romanian data catalogue he recommends to carry out status for each historical earthquake.
Tatevossian
Shows as example his procedure of work to revise the historical information for the Romania earthquakes.
Stucchi (Task 3.1 leader)
He draws attention on the possibility to have fake Vrancea or non-Vrancea earthquakes in the ROMPLUS catalogue.
Tatevossian
Shows a few cases of Vrancea earthquakes with macroseismic data points existing in the NERIES-SHARE archive for which with pure information on the Romania territory.
Radulian
Related to this problem mentions that one of the significant contribution of the Romania partner is to improve the macroseismic information for these events.
Glavcheva
Discusses briefly the possibility to obtain additioal historical data for Romania events in neighbouring countries like Bulgaria, Serbia, Republic of Moldova.
Final comments and recommendations
- The participants agreed that Romania is one of the regions where the background of the catalogue is poorly known (and poor);
- A good step forward would be to compile a state-of-the-art of the historical earthquakes in Romania according to the standard provided by INGV. This would cast new light and could address further investigation.
- One big challenge is to discriminate between Vrancea and non Vrancea events. The latest are in some way more interesting.
- "Free" investigations, like the one started by the Romanian historian can be of some interest, but the risk is that a useful outcome is very poor.
- The investigation proposed by Oros are in tune. However, it has to be understood that the NERIES-SHARE archive will be useful for the benefit of everybody if it is one. If we multiply smaller archives we come back to the current situation, where the basic know how has been destroyed. Moreover, the progress he presented should be made more clear and explicit.
